Spring Fling

We hope you all had an amazing time at our Annual Spring Fling, Presented by Cromer Food Services!  Thank you to our Joyful Sponsor, Diamonds-n-Gold Direct and our other sponsors: Kimberly McCracken with Keller-Williams Upstate, Chappelear & Associates, and the Tatum Family.

Live music from Christy Williamson set the tone for our happy day spent on the MSA soccer field. Perfectly Imperfect Coffee Co. gave us all the energy needed to keep up with the kids as they enjoyed Zooligan’s bounce house and inflatable obstacle course. Attendees shopped with our local artisan vendors, bringing home goodies from Sew and Tail, Annie’s Chalk Therapy, and tie-dye shirts from Chrissy Saunders.

There were a lot of fun learning activities celebrating spring from birds, to bugs, to plants, and butterflies. Zuber’s Mobile Petting Zoo provided an up close experience with some of springtime’s newest, cutest additions! Speaking of newest and cutest--Golden Beach Acres brought a snuggley pack of puppies ready for cuddles and their forever home. While one lucky kid got to take a puppy home, others were still happy to take home their sand art and clay whistles! And there were a lot of splashes at our dunk tank as attendees took a chance at tossing a ball to dunk teacher, Mr. Dabney, as well as an MSA mom and even two LE students!

Our technology program showcase featured several robots, coding for all ages, and our 3D printer. They also shared information about our elementary summer camp program where students from grades 2-7 can learn all of this and so much more! If you’re interested in learning more, check out our summer camp website at msasc.org/summercamps.

Families dined in our picnic area with lunch from Honey Baked Ham Company and Los Meros Tacos followed by a much needed cool treat from Kona Ice. Our Primary Program Guides setup a special toddler zone nearby which helped adults sit and enjoy their meals and conversation a little bit longer!

Thank you SO much to everyone who attended the event -- we loved seeing your smiling faces on such a beautiful day! Big thank you to everyone who volunteered and helped make the event successful and thank you again to our sponsors!

Chemis-Tea Testing

Students in Mr. Saunier's Chemistry class took Butterfly Pea Flower, a dried flower, and made tea from it. This tea makes a beautiful deep blue tea. They then added lemon juice, which is acidic. This tea is very pH reactive, and changes to a deep purple that deepens as you add more acid to it. They then used pH test strips to look at the change in pH as the lemon is added and how it affects the color of the tea.

Plant Growth Experiment

In a cross-level STEAM activity, students in Lower Elementary looking to determine whether or not corn on the cob was alive planted a corn cob as an experiment to test their hypotheses. When, after a couple of weeks, the corn cob was covered in sprouts, the students wanted to test whether the sprouts were growing from the cob or the kernels. So, the students revised their experimental setup and involved Middle School students in the Technology Club in order to monitor the growth after planting a new corn cob. An eighth grade student set up a Raspberry Pi computer and camera to record an image of the growth every fifteen minutes for twenty days, and those images were combined to create this video:
